According to Laurel County Sheriff Fred Yaden, a pick-up, driven by 26-year-old Rachel Hubbard, of London, collided head-on with a vehicle driven by 30-year-old Chassidy Wilson, of Gray.

Hubbard, Wilson, and four passengers in Wilson’s vehicle, Donnie Wilson and three children, were airlifted to the University of Kentucky and University of Tennessee Medical Centers for treatment of various severe injuries.

Following an initial investigation, police believe that alcohol and drugs were a contributing factorin the crash. Sheriff Yaden says the lack of proper child restraints and seat belt usage contributed to the injuries sustained in the crash.

The holiday crackdown coincides with the state’s ” Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest” campaign, which began August 20 and ends September 6.

Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock said “Saving lives and reducing serious injuries on our highways is one of the highest priorities for this administration, while we promote safe driving throughout the year, we give special attention to holiday periods because of the increased traffic volume.”

Law enforcement officers will be out in force conducting traffic safety checkpoints and saturation patrols to get impaired drivers off the road.

During the 2009 Labor Day holiday weekend, 10 people were killed and over 340 were injured on Kentucky roadways. Six of those deaths involved alcohol.
