Landslide closes U.S. 421 in Clay County

U.S. 421 in eastern Clay County is closed just north of the KY 66 junction due to a landslide.  Crews are on the scene and cleanup is underway.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet asks motorists to be aware of the closure and to utilize safe driving habits when traveling through the area.

Stolen property recovered in Laurel County

Two people are in jail in Laurel County accused of stealing equipment from a local construction company.

Following a tip Monday, Kentucky State Police troopers arrived at a location on Little Pittsburg Road in London to find a portable light tower belonging to Elmo Greer and Son’s.

Officers arrested 55-year-old Donnie Simpson of Pittsburgh and 43-year-old Donna Riggs of Lilly.

The two were charged with Receiving Stolen Property Under $10,000.

Knox County man faces several charges for firing shots in Kay Jay

A Knox County man is facing several charges after he allegedly shot at a car and another person.  

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint Monday about a possible shooting on Blue Hole Branch Road in the Kay Jay community. 

When deputies arrived, they saw Arvil Lake driving from the scene with a weapon in his car

Lake was charged with two counts of wanton endangerment and several other charges in the case.

Man gets 20 years in DUI death of daughter

A Laurel County man gets 20 years in the DUI Death of his daughter

Robert Hammons was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday after he admitted he was drunk when he wrecked his car, killing his thirteen-year-old daughter, Destiney.

Hammons was originally facing murder charges, but was instead sentenced on a second-degree manslaughter charge after a plea agreement.

McCreary couple files $6.5 million lawsuit against Kraft Foods

A McCreary County couple has filed a $6.5 million lawsuit against Kraft Foods alleging the husband sustained a perforated bowel and peritonitis from a piece of metal he ingested when he ate a microwavable Velveeta Shells and Cheese dish.

Leamon Perkins of Pine Knot underwent surgery Sept. 29, one day before Kraft Foods Global recalled the microwavable dish for the possible presence of small, thin pieces of wire bristle. 

About 137,000 cases of the affected product were shipped to customers across the United States.

Perkins is requesting $6 million in compensatory and punitive damages;  his wife, Lisa, is seeking $500,000 for her loss of consortium.

Perry County deputy jailer faces assault charge

A Perry County deputy jailer is facing assault charges after a female inmate accused him of slapping her.

The incident happened Thursday night at the Kentucky River Regional Jail.

Inmate Jessica Chapman says Deputy Jailer Roy Lawson hit her while her hands were behind her back.  Investigators found that the altercation was unwarranted.

Kentucky State Police took the information to the county attorney, and Lawson was charged with fourth degree assault.  He was arrested and brought to the Kentucky River Regional Jail where he has since bonded out.

Lawson has been suspended from work pending the investigation.

Wildcats No. 1 again in AP poll

The Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team has taken over the top spot again in the latest polls.

The Cats got all 31 first-place votes in the ESPN/USA Today poll, and got 61 of 65 votes in the AP poll.

UK, who was ranked No. 1 for two weeks earlier this season, moved up one place Monday after the previous No. 1, Syracuse, lost to Notre Dame Saturday night.

UK defeated Alabama and Arkansas last week.

The Cats will take their eleven-game winning streak to Georgia tonight to take on the Bulldogs.  The game will air at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

Sen. Rand Paul stopped at Nashville airport for refusing pat-down

Sen. Rand Paul was stopped briefly by security at the Nashville airport this morning when he refused a pat down by airport security.

According to reports, the full-body scanner found an “anomaly” on his knee.  Paul reportedly pulled up his pant leg and asked for another scan, but refused a full pat-down by airport security.

Paul missed his flight to Washington, D.C., but was rebooked on another flight and rescanned without incident.

Attorney General looking into Zappos breach

Attorney General Jack Conway is joining the attorneys generals from nine other states in looking into a recent data breach at Zappos.com, Inc.

The attorneys general have asked the online retailer to provide details about the company’s actions in response to the breach and its efforts to protect consumers’ sensitive information.

In addition, the states are also seeking information about the breach and the identification and notification of affected customers.
