Four arrested during weekend meth bust

Four people were arrested over the weekend in a meth bust in Laurel County.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to a complaint of a possible meth lab Friday at a home in Park Subdivision off KY 229 in London.

There, they discovered an active one-step meth la b along with numerous components used in the manufacture of meth.

Arrested were 27-year-old William Wilder, 34-year-old Tommy Ooten, 47-year-old Renea Ooten and 33-year-old Angela Roark.

All were charged with manufacturing meth and lodged in the Laurel County jail.

State Police make drug bust during traffic stop

State police arrested two men from out-of-state during a traffic stop Sunday night.

State troopers pulled over a Chevy Tahoe on northbound I-75 in Laurel County where they observed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

A state police canine located two pounds of processed marijuana hidden inside a large speaker box, along with a box that contained approximately twelve marijuana plants in red ‘solo’ cups.

Troopers arrested 24-year-old Douglas Andre Rice of Michigan and 23-year-old Marlon Washington of North Carolina on drug-related charges.

Both men were lodged in the Laurel County jail.

Corbin man shot to death by former stepson

A Tennessee man has been charged with shooting and killing his former stepfather in Whitley County.

Officials say 41-year-old Keith Mason of Oak Ridge, TN,  shot and killed 60-year-old Robert Vanover of Corbin.

It happened Friday afternoon near the Tennessee line.

Officials say Mason was in rural Whitley County when he and Vanover got into a fight.  Mason told police he shot Vanover three times in self-defense, though reports say Vanover did not have a gun.

Mason has been charged with manslaughter and remains in the Whitley County jail.

Laurel County Schools official indicted on sexual abuse charges

A Laurel County Schools official has been indicted on several counts of sexual abuse of a minor.

52-year-old Charles Douglas Phelps, the school district’s Director of Pupil Personnel, was indicted in Laurel Circuit Court Friday.  He is charged with three counts of first-degree sexual abuse and two counts of third degree unlawful transaction with a minor.

So far, Phelps is not in custody.  A warrant will be issued for his arrest, and his bond will be set at $15,000 after he is in custody.

Phelps has reportedly been on suspension with pay since Kentucky State Police began their investigation into the incident in November.

London woman gets 12 1/2 years for Christmas day murder

A London woman who admitted to a Christmas Day murder was sentenced to 12 ½ years in prison Friday.

Police say 23-year-old Roi Lynn Collett stabbed her boyfriend, Christopher Allen, to death on Christmas day 2010. 

She initially pleaded guilty, then withdrew the plea and later agreed to a plea deal.

Corbin man charged with DUI after crash on I-75

A man has been charged with DUI after a crash on I-75 in Laurel County over the weekend.

It happened Sunday afternoon about 3 miles south of London.

Police say 37-year-old Arvis Presley Jr. of Corbin was under the influence when he ran his vehicle off the road and over and embankment in a single vehicle crash.

Presley was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence and possession of marijuana.

He is scheduled to appear in Laurel District Court on Feb. 17.

Laurel County Sheriff’s office to hold fourth Town Hall meeting Monday

The Laurel County Sheriff’s office will be hosting its fourth Town Hall meeting Monday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.

The meeting is the fourth of quarterly meetings that Sheriff John Root promised the people of Laurel County.

The meeting will allow citizens to meet their sheriff and other ‘elected’ county officials and ask questions on such topics as conducting a neighborhood watch.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at the Laurel County Fire Department on East 4th Street in London.

State cabinet fined for withholding records

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services has been fined more than $16,000 for withholding records about children who died or were hurt because of abuse and neglect.

Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd ruled Thursday that the cabinet willfully withheld public information from the state’s two largest newspapers and the Todd County Standard, who sued the cabinet for access to the records.

Shepherd also ordered the cabinet to pay more than $57,000 in legal feels the papers incurred in challenging the cabinet
