DNA testing to be considered in 14-year-old murder case

A McCreary County man on death row for more than a decade is expected to have a hearing today to consider DNA testing in his case

John Garland was arrested, convicted and sentenced to death in the 1997 murders of Willa Ferrier, Crystal Conaster and Chris Boswell.

The Kentucky Supreme Court overruled the decision last year, allowing Garland’s legal team to have DNA testing done on a hair taken from the crime scene.

The hair sample is the only evidence remaining after a house fire destroyed all other evidence.

Holiday World owners show interest in reviving Kentucky Kingdom

The owners of two Indiana amusement parks have expressed interest in reviving Kentucky Kingdom.

According to InsiderLouisville.com, the owners of Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari in Indiana issued a statement Monday expressing interest in the closed Louisville park.

A spokeswoman for the parks said the process is still in the fact-finding stage, and no offer has been made.

Kentucky Kingdom closed in 2009 after Six Flags filed for bankruptcy.

New study shows economic impact of expanded gambling

A new study claims opening casinos at eight Kentucky racetracks would have a more than $1 billion economic impact in the first year alone.

The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce released the study Monday.

According to the Herald-Leader, the study found casinos would also create nearly 11,000 full-time jobs.

Governor Beshear wants a constitutional amendment to be put on the ballot that would let Kentucky voters decide whether to expand gambling.

East Bernstadt man arrested for fleeing and evading police

An East Bernstadt man faces numerous charges after he allegedly fled from police early Saturday morning.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint around 1 a.m. Saturday that a car was traveling on U.S. 25 near KY 490 with sparks flying off it.

Apparently, the suspect had struck something in town causing the right front tire to blow out. 

When the deputy located the vehicle and attempted to pull the driver over, the driver allegedly failed to stop for over two miles.

The deputy arrested 46-year-old Anthony Brown on charges of speeding, failure to illuminate headlamps, no brake lights, failure to wear seat belt, reckless driving, fleeing and evading police, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

 

Beshear to deliver budget proposal Tuesday

Gov. Steve Beshear is set to deliver his budget proposal to a joint session of the House and Senate Tuesday.

Beshear has already warned state agencies that they should brace for spending cuts in the upcoming two-year budget, with initial projections in the 7 to 9 percent range.

Even agencies that have been largely spared from past spending reductions are expected to be hit this time around, including education, corrections and health care.
