Joint committe to discuss pseudoephedrine bill

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

The House and Senate judiciary committees will hold a joint meeting Thursday morning to hear expert testimony on whether the state should require that pseudoephedrine be made available only by prescription.

The bill would make it harder to purchase large quantities of cold and allergy medications such as Sudafed, because they are used in production of methamphetamine.

Lawmakers have been debating over the past year whether to restrict sales of the medications.  The proposal didn’t garner enough support to pass in last year’s legislative session.

Man causes four separate crashes in 24 hours

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Police believe a man could be responsible for four separate crashes in less than 24 hours in Somerset, and police say he didn’t appear to be under the influence.

The first accident happened Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Bourbon Road and South U.S. 27.

Just a short distance away, the same driver caused another crash and fled the scene.

Wednesday morning, the same driver is said to have sideswiped a car at U.S. 27 and Kit Cowan Road, and finally got stuck in a ditch after hitting some roadway signs near the Parkers Mill Intersection.

Police think 53-year-old Dennis Shumaker is responsible for all of the crashes.

Shumaker was given a field sobriety test and gave no indication if being under the influence.

The case will be taken to the county attorney to decide if any charges are necessary.
