5-year-old child dies at Corbin hotel

A death investigation is underway regarding the death of a 5-year-old boy Thursday in Laurel County.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Department was notified Thursday morning that a 5-year-old child had developed breathing difficulties at a motel, 12 miles south of London.

The boy was transported EMS to a local hospital (BRMC) where he was pronounced dead by the Whitley County Coroner.

The child and his family were apparently from Florida and were visiting family in the Corbin area.

The child reportedly had medical problems.

Beshear to appoint commission to study tax reform

Gov. Steve Besher plans to appoint a new commission to review the state’s tax code and recommend reforms.

Beshear told business leaders at a Kentucky Chamber of Commerce dinner Thursday that Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson will lead the commission through several months of study over the coming year.  A consultant will be hired to review the kinds of tax reforms that have worked in other states.

Beshear said he will challenge the commission to recommend changes that will make the tax code fair, competitive, simple and adequate to fund state services.

Man, ex-girlfriend plead not guilty in murder of wife

A husband and his ex-girlfriend pleaded not guilty Thursday to the murder of his wife.

Jason Singleton and Christina Marcum are accused of murdering his wife, Angela Frazier-Singleton, and dismembering her body.  Her remains were found in a Madison County field in trash bags last January.

Singleton was sentenced to 10 years in prison last month for holding several people hostage during a standoff with police in Somerset shortly after the murder.

KY men arrested in TN with 62 lbs of marijuana

Three Kentucky men were arrested in Tennessee Wednesday after 62 pounds of marijuana was found in their SUV during a traffic stop.

A Knoxville police officer pulled over the men for an alleged traffic violation after witnessing a drug deal outside a convenience store.

Inside the vehicle the officer and his K-9 found 62 pounds of marijuana packaged in blocks.

He arrested Oscar Lara, Alejandro Ivarra and Jesus Lopez, all of Lexington.
