Regina Bunch officially sworn in Tuesday

Newly elected Republican state Rep. Regina Bunch was officially sworn in yesterday.

 Bunch took the oath of office Tuesday during the opening of the 2012 legislative session.

She takes the place of her husband Dwayne Bunch who resigned in October after suffering a severe head injury last year.  He had been injured trying to break up a fight at Whitley County High School, where he was a teacher.

LIHEAP begins Wednesday

The low-income home energy assistance program LIHEAP begins Wednesday.

The program helps pay for the heating bills of poverty-level families who cannot afford to do so themselves.

Last year more than 5000 people in Eastern Kentucky qualified for the crisis component of LIHEAP.

Even though their state funding was cut from 57 to 26 million this year, employees remain hopeful that more funding will be made available.

25 hunters drawn for late-season elk hunt

Twenty-five hunters from Pineville, Pikeville, Barbourville and other areas in southeastern Kentucky will have a second chance to hunt elk in the state.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources recently drew 25 names for a late session quota hunt for cow elk.

The late season begins Jan. 28 and ends Feb. 10.

Those drawn for the hunt will receive notification in the mail.  Hunters may also see if they were drawn by going online to the department’s website at fw.ky.gov.

Five killed on Kentucky roadways during New Year’s holiday

Preliminary statistics indicate that five people died in four separate crashes on Kentucky roadways during the New Year’s holiday.

All of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and two of the victims were not wearing seat belts. 

Single-fatality crashes occurred in Harlan, Jefferson and Perry counties.  One double-fatality crash occurred in Owen County.

 The crash in Harlan involved the suspected use of alcohol.

In 2011, preliminary statistics indicate 715 people died on Kentucky roadways.  This is 45 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2010.
