Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday, Corbin City officials and Corbin Independent School officials were on hand, Tuesday, as a hybrid school bus was presented, by Whayne Supply Company to Corbin Schools.
The cost of a hybrid school bus is approximately $150,000, about twice as much as traditional school buses. Corbin Independent Schools is one of 22 districts awarded a share of $13 million in stimulus funds to pay for the cost above the cost of a traditional school bus.
Corbin School Superintendent Ed McNeel said the school district is looking forward to getting 12 miles per gallon compared to 7.5 miles per gallon with traditional buses. McNeel said the district plans to eventually replace the current fleet with hybrid buses. McNeel added that the district wants to do it’s part for a clean environment.
The bus will likely hit the road in about a week, and will be driven by Roy Hammons.
