A Corbin girl is at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
According to Corbin Police Captain Rob Jones, Public Affairs Officer, a van, later determined to have been driven by 42-year-old Michael Wayne Petrey, struck the girl on the Cumberland Falls Highway, and continued on.
After receiving information from witnesses, Corbin Police Assistant Chief Bruce Rains arrested Petrey at his 11th Street residence, about 3 and a half miles from the scene of the incident.
The girl, reportedly age 12, was taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center, then flown to U.K..
Captain Jones said the girl, who’s name has not been released, suffered a head injury, broken femur and possibly a broken pelvis.
Petrey is charged with second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident, no operators license and no insurance. He was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
