Corbin Cuts Main Street Program

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Following a heated debate over the main street program, Corbin City Commissioner Joe Shelton made a motion to cut the position of the main street manager from full-time to 20 hours per week. Mayor Willard McBurney and Commissioner Phil Gregory voted in favor of the action.

Shelton’s motion came after the recommendation of City Manager Bill Ed Cannon, who, while noting cuts in the police, fire, recreation and public works departments, described the program as “non-essential”, given the current economic condition of the City of Corbin and the rest of the nation.

Supporters of Main Street Manager Sharae Myers expressed the view that the job could not be done on a part-time basis.

Mayor McBurney pointed to the highly-successful program in Bardstown Kentucky as an example of what could be accomplished with a part-time manager.
